Japandi is the meeting point of Japanese simplicity and Scandinavian warmth, and lighting is where the style comes alive. Both traditions treat light as something to be softened, filtered and shaped rather than simply switched on. If you want a home that feels calm the moment you walk in, this is the place to start.
The principles
Japandi lighting follows a few quiet rules. Nothing is shiny. Light is warm and diffused rather than bright and direct. Fixtures are made from natural materials, wood, paper, linen, plaster and ceramic, and their shapes are simple, often organic. And there is restraint: one well-chosen pendant where another style might use three.
Materials to look for
Wood is the backbone: light oak and ash for a Scandi feel, darker walnut for a more Japanese mood. Wood slat and ring designs filter light beautifully. Plaster and ceramic shades glow softly from within. Rice-paper and linen shades diffuse light completely and are the classic Japandi pendant. Avoid chrome; if you want metal, choose matt black or brushed brass in small amounts.
Shapes
Think cones, domes, drums and rings. A single cone pendant on a wood canopy beside a bed is pure Japandi. A low, wide dome over a dining table is another. Wall lights are simple bars or half-moons. Floor lamps are tall, slim and often tripod or single-stem.
Light colour
This is non-negotiable: warm white, 2700K or at most 3000K. Cooler light flattens the natural materials and kills the calm. Dimmable fixtures are ideal because Japandi rooms are designed to be enjoyed at low light in the evening.
Room by room
Living room: one wood or plaster pendant as the centrepiece, a linen-shaded floor lamp by the seating and nothing else overhead. Bedroom: small cone or dome pendants hung low either side of the bed in place of table lamps, plus a flush ceiling light on a dimmer. Dining: a wide, low dome or a wood ring over the table. Hallway: a simple flush fitting and perhaps one wall light.
What to avoid
- Crystal, chrome and anything that sparkles.
- Cool-white or daylight LEDs.
- Too many fixtures. If in doubt, remove one.
- Visible bulbs. Japandi light is always shaded or diffused.
